Common Fraud Types

Romance scam

You’ve made a new connection on social media, an online forum, or dating website and are asked to pay for travel or other emergency expenses.

Tip: Never send money to someone you have not met in person.

Advance fee scam

When you’re asked to pay fees upfront for a loan, credit card, grant, investment, or inheritance money.

Tip: Avoid responding to messages that come from unknown senders.

Internet purchase scam

Scammers post fake items for sale on classified sites or marketplaces and ask buyers to send money. Don’t fall for it!

Tip: Shop well-known and trustworthy websites.

Emergency scam

When you get a call from a relative with a sudden emergency and they need you to send money NOW!

Tip: Don’t react, respond. Ask a lot of questions to verify it is in fact your family and verify the emergency with another family member.

Imposter scam

When a person poses as a friend, family member, or credible figure and tricks you into sending money.

Tip: Keep your personal information under lock and key.

Rental scam

Scammers exploit periods of property rental rush with listings posted at unrealistically low prices.

Tip: Use verified rental websites and do not send money through untrusted methods.

Employment scam

When a ‘boss’ sends a check for ‘work related expenses’ but then they ask you to send back money. The check will bounce and you’re responsible for the full amount.

Tip: If you’ve been sent a check, wait for it to clear before sending any money (funds may be available early, but checks can take 10-14 days to clear)

Lottery or sweepstakes scam

The ‘Congratulations You’ve Won!’ out of nowhere. Scammers love targeting lottery and sweepstakes dreams.

Tip: Learn to spot the fakes. Legitimate contests will contact you directly through their official channels. Always verify before sending any money!
