What does Family Day mean in Canada?

Canada By Mitchell Steiman February 23, 2022

Family Day in Canada is celebrated every year on the third Monday of February. The date was created in 1990 in the province of Alberta to strengthen ties and bring relatives together to celebrate the importance of family. This way, everybody can get together to reflect on values, and working parents take the opportunity to spend more time with their children.

This is a very important date that Canadians look forward to, especially in the provinces of Ontario, New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. However, in other parts of the country, it is a normal work and school day. One city, for example, that does not usually celebrate Family Day is Quebec, as it has different customs because it was settled by French Catholics.

How is Family Day celebrated in Canada?

This year, 2022, Family Day will be on February 21st. As this date is an official holiday in some provinces, many people take advantage of the long weekend to travel and spend it with their relatives. Canadians also usually organize leisure activities to do as a family, such as visiting art exhibitions, walking in city parks, and watching movies.

In some parts of the country, special public events are organized to celebrate this date, with cultural and gastronomic attractions for citizens and tourists. During the day, it is common to see children playing on the playgrounds that are installed in the parks, and several people ice-skating in the Canadian winter. It is a day marked by lots of affection, celebration, and family fun.
