The Western Union Foundation is proud to welcome Sasha to this year’s cohort of Global Scholars, a program that supports high-potential, in-need international students.
Sasha has endured challenging circumstances since beginning her collegiate journey as a Business Major and ASI (Art, Science, Innovation) and Psychology Minor at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. Originally from Ukraine, Sasha’s family has been greatly impacted by the war as her father’s business was occupied by Russian soldiers and her family is now displaced in Europe. Despite this stressful experience and being away from her family, Sasha has retained a strong 3.93 GPA and is immersing herself in campus groups including Model UN and the international club. She also considers herself a social entrepreneur and has created a gamified therapy app to support forcibly displaced refugees from Ukraine.
“Social entrepreneurship and change have never been more crucial to me. I have been able to launch the app called ‘Wheat’ to help refugees with the psychological aspect of the forced immigration crisis,” Sasha shared. “The primary reason I was able to launch this app was because I was awarded the scholarship from the Western Union Foundation which allowed me to focus on the app instead of worrying about how to afford tuition.”
Sasha’s collegiate success is a testament to her academic talents and drive to succeed. She continues to dream big and is influenced by the war in Ukraine and the toll it’s taking on her family, friends, and home country.
“It’s very significant for my family that Western Union is supporting me,” Sasha shared. “With the beginning of the war, the opportunity to attend college has become even more vital. I long to study hard to be able to help rebuild my country.”
