For the fifth year in a row, Western Union has been recognized by The Dave Thomas Foundation as one of the 100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplace (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020 and 2019) for Adoption.
The Foundation compares financial reimbursement and paid leave offered to employees who adopt, recognizing the organizations with the most robust adoption-benefit programs.
Western Union offers regular full-time and part-time employees with at least six months of service reimbursement for some expenses incurred in the legal adoption of a child or children under the age of 18. Unlimited (more than one) and multiple adoptions (of twins, triplets, sibling pairs, etc.) are included in the program.
Reimbursement is up to a maximum of $10,000 per adopted child. Covered expenses can include, when not otherwise reimbursable by an applicable government program or an insurance benefit:
- Fees for authorized adoption agencies
- Legal fees
- Court costs
- Maternity fees (i.e., medical expenses for the child’s biological mother not otherwise covered)
- Reasonable coach-class travel expenses (including meals and lodging) required to pick up a child from another location
- Other expenses directly related to the legal adoption of a child not incurred in violation of any applicable laws
“At Western Union, we strive to create a culture of inclusivity and belonging,” said Tim Cinalli, Head of Global Benefits and Payroll. “To this end, we are proud to support families of all kinds, by providing benefits such as global adoption assistance and parental leave.”
Western Union has offered the benefit in the US for more than 10 years and it became available globally in 2013. Time off for adoptive parents varies by country and is subject to applicable laws and policies.
