Italian news agency Agimeg writes about how money is currently transferred in Italy and how it may change in the future.
Money transfers can be now done and is increasingly performed by over 5,000 tobacco shops in small shops in the country, which allows customers, mostly foreigners, to transfer sums of money to people in other countries around the world, they write.
They quote Gabriel Sorbo, CEO for Italy of Western Union, who tells the news agency that “the money transfer sector in Italy is quite significant, so much so that Italy is one of the top 10 countries in the world for importance in the remittance market.”
The commissions for the tobacco shops who use Western Union at their shops “are very attractive, about two euros per transaction,” they write.
“Among other things, what [tobacco shops] often appreciate most is that having the Western Union service helps them to expand their customers, allowing them to also develop the sale of other products and services at their shops,” they add.
According to Sorbo, tobacconists in Italy are “particularly important for Western Union because they help us as they have a very wide presence throughout the country, also allowing customers who live in small towns, even the most remote, to access Western Union services.”
