Western Union transfers the money to the Mobile Wallet1 on the recipient’s mobile phone. The amount is transferred to the Mobile Wallet account1 , which is linked to the recipient’s phone number.

To ensure that the money reaches the right person, make sure you enter the correct mobile phone number. If you send money via a mobile phone number, you can easily track money transfers. The recipient will also receive an SMS from their provider confirming that the money has been delivered.

If the recipient lives in a country where we offer this service, you can transfer money directly from Austria to their mobile phone. Make sure that the recipient has activated a Mobile Wallet1 with one of our partner mobile phone providers in their country of residence. This is how it works:

  • Go to our website or download the Western Union® app to register or sign up for a free online account.

  • Enter the amount you want to send and select the recipient’s country. If you want to send money to a mobile phone, select Mobile Wallet1 as the receiving method.

  • Select your preferred payment method: Credit card2, debit card, instant bank transfer or bank transfer.

  • Enter the recipient’s details, including their phone number and Mobile Wallet1 details. Make sure the recipient’s name matches their official ID.

As soon as your transfer is completed, you will receive a confirmation via SMS with the transaction number (MTCN). Both you and the recipient can use this number to track the status of the money transfer in real time. We will also confirm the successful delivery of the mobile money transfer.

Is it really safe to send money to a mobile phone?

The sender must provide identification in order to send money to a Mobile Wallet. Transfers must comply with the regulations in force in the sender’s country and those for cross-border transfers. Mobile operators secure their customers’ Mobile Wallets1 with a PIN and other security measures. For more information, contact your mobile phone provider.

If the recipient’s mobile phone has been lost or stolen, he should contact his mobile phone provider. They will block or deactivate the Mobile Wallet for his or her protection.

Does the sender need a mobile phone?

No, the sender does not need a mobile phone himself to send money to a mobile phone. However, if the sender has a mobile phone and gives his mobile number, he will receive an SMS to confirm that the money has been deposited. He will also be informed of any problems by SMS.

What currency is paid out to the recipient?

Money transfers to mobile phones are paid in the local currency of the recipient country.
