Frequently asked questions

What do you need to transfer money to a bank account?

Whether you’re sending money via credit1 card to a bank account or using cash at a Western Union agent location, to make an international money transfer you need the following details from your receiver:

  • Full name
  • Country
  • Bank name
  • Bank identifier code (BIC)
  • Account number (IBAN).
How long does it take for the money to be transferred?

Money transfer times vary country to country, but it usually takes one to three working days3. To some countries and partners, your money may be delivered on the same day, whereas others take longer. For example, a bank transfer to Ukraine can arrive in one-to-two business days, whereas a money transfer to Argentina can take one-to-six business days. If you’re ever in doubt, we provide estimates of transfer times before you commit.

How high is the cost for a money transfer abroad?

Our transfer fees2 vary depending on the destination country, money transfer amount, and payout method. Use our online price estimator to see how much it could cost to transfer money to your receiver online – including the transfer fees2 and transfer total – with no obligation.

Transfer fees2 to send money online or via the Western Union® app can vary. When you transfer money in person, any transfer fees2 you’re charged by Western Union, and the exchange rates applied, are explained in the money transfer form provided to you at the agent location.

If you’re using a credit1 card to transfer money online a credit card issuer cash advance transfer fee and associated interest charges may apply. You can avoid these fees by using a debit card.

How can I send money quickly?

Our transfer times vary depending on the money transfer method and your receiver’s country. Often, a fast way to send money is for cash pickup at an agent location – as money can arrive in minutes3. You can send money online or via the Western Union® app for cash pickup.

When you start a money transfer online you can also check the estimated delivery times after you enter the send amount, payment and receiving method. Sending to a bank account and paying by Sofort or credit1/debit card are sometimes quicker than making a bank-to-bank transfer – though it depends on the destination.
